Fluid Leak From Small Hole In Drive Shaft

HI all, another question: While mechanic was checking out wheel bearings he discovered a small hold in the drive shaft just aft of where the ujoint joins the transmission. Fluid(oil) is leaking from that hole and smattering on the catalytic converter. Is there a purpose for that small hole? If so, should fluid be leaking from it? Am in another dilemma. Thanks Jay

There should be no fluid inside your driveshaft, any fluid that apears to be coming from there is actually coming from somewhere else.
What color is the fluid?
My suspicion is trans fluid traveling from the rear seal.

Hi tbplus 10. Oil(fluid) color is difficult to tell, as most is no longer liquid. Some small liquid amount on U Joint just aft of trans. Appears to be dark. I had trans worked on a year ago, and this when leak. Could see stain on ground. I think perhaps the shop did something incorrect when reinstalling trans to damage seal. At any rate, the mechanic who worked on my front bearings (which were ok, by the way) indicated there was a very small hold on the drive shaft. His thought leak coming from here. replace your rear seal and check for cracked output shaft

Is the drive shaft stock or an aftermarket? Shouldn't be any holes in the shaft & if there is, the cardboard inner damper is probably soaked in oil/sludge/road grime or if your in the north road salt deicer. IF it is rusted / salt eaten inside, it will be out of balance and ready to come unglued when torque is applied in the future. IF it is an OEM I'd look for a replacement shaft @ the salvage yards. Usually if the rear seal goes bad oil will sling all over the tunnel in that area but the flange would stop from entering the shaft at the U joint. If your shaft is a U joint mount it attaches to a cast hub that is welded into the tube of the shaft, there is no way oil should be able to enter from that area, it's solid metal. Take it to a local drive shaft shop and have them check the balance & wall thickness. Also if it has any dents expect the same results in the near future.
