Coolant smell + no leak "What should I do?"

I was helping my neighbor out with his Tacoma. You can smell coolant after the Tacoma warms up. I jumped in and took a ride with him and could see smoke. According to the temp gauge it is not over-beating. There are no obvious leaks. However when my neighbor stopped the truck, I could smell it through the vents, but once he starts driving there is no smell.

Find a local auto parts store that rents or loans a coolant system pressure checker.
Follow the directions, since you noted the odor comes from the vents look around the heat exchanger under the dash.
Also check the heater hoses.
Dont know what year or mileage but check the water pump, back behind and below it on the block you may see signs of a leak.
