Upshot: I took it back to the guys who did the engine swap and they didn't have time to look at it but suggested it was most likely a problem with a spark plug wire. Back home, I did find corrosion on one connector at the distributor, but cleaning that up had no effect. The big find was the...
That sounds like a good possibility. Maybe just a new gasket would fix it. Even possible that that particular issue might be covered under the warranty for the swapped engine (I have been avoiding involving the guys who swapped it because I figured the problem was in a component of the original...
'86 pickup w/ rebuilt 22R engine from about a year ago. Trouble began recently.
It usually starts easily, but after 30 secs or so of warm-up, if I try to drive it the engine stutters and misses, and will die at a stop sign if I stop too quickly. The more load (uphill), the worse, and it...

87, that cheap insurance--how can it be that...
Kenny, I agree about sinking money into an older truck....the only issue being minimal insurance coverage if it gets totaled (knock wood). Nice vehicles there. Mine's an antique by comparison. ;-)

It's a long-bed/extended cab '86 pickup with 290K miles and 22R (carb) engine and no AC. Symptoms of a blown head gasket (fluid in oil, overheating) caused me to take the truck to a well-respected non-dealer shop in my area. They took off the head and found a bit of a mess and (long story short)...
I'm from Northern CA (SF Bay Area) and bought my little gem ('86 pickup, long bed/extended cab) lightly used in '88 with 22K on it. The odometer now reads 289,999 and except for some engine issues, she's holding up well. Those engine issue are why I'm here.
