Wow, can anything stop the sales of new Toyota RAV4 vehicles in the US? Just goes to prove that people want SUVs/utility vehicles, NOT cars. Ford made the right decision.

Once the rav4 kept going up in size, they kept going up in sales. The first generation (XA10; 1994–2003) was just too small for a lot of US buyers to be comfortable in. The second generation (XA20; 2000–2005) increased the size a little bit, but not much. Going to the third generation (XA30; 2005–2016) was a total redesign of the platform and added size in wheelbase, length, width and height. Ignoring the model-year-overlap in different non-US markets, the fourth generation (XA40; 2012–2018) was another redesign that went even larger. This leads us to the current fifth generation (XA50; 2018–present) that actually has drawn back a little bit on exterior size with additional interior space.

  • 1st Generation (XA10; 1994–2003)
  • 2nd Generation (XA20; 2000–2005)
  • 3rd Generation (XA30; 2005–2016)
  • 4th Generation (XA40; 2012–2018)
  • 5th Generation (XA50; 2018–present)
Just to make it easier to plot against the growth in size. Sales really took of with the introduction to the 4th generation RAV4.

The RAV4 is a good quality car. Purchased our 4th Gen (2014) back in Aug 2014 with <10 miles. Very reliable. Instead of opting for the 10k service intervals - I do every every 5k. Its never been back to the dealer. So far only two items have been replaced: Set of new tires @ 50k and new battery @ 57k. Could have kept going on the OEM battery but did not want to push my luck.
