Been looking around my area for a older model truck to drive to work, take trash to dump, etc. Ran across this 87 one owner that looks to be in pretty good condition. Of course the dealer is asking a arm & leg for it and over three to four times book value. What kind of problems does the 22R 2.4 motor have? Timing chain or belt? Any other input? May go drive it for the heck of it anyway. Check it out here: 1987 Toyota Pickup 2dr Standard Cab SB In Lynchburg VA - T & M Motors

87 model trucks were close to bullet proof.
The biggest issue with them is the bed, corrosion under the top rails and wheel archs. Look for trucks with The smooth side sr5 style bed vice notched side. Nothed side beds came directly from Japan and were shipped mounted to the frame unpainted awaiting paint at final assembly in Fremont .ca.
The 4 spd trans which was std that year develops sloppy shift habits, there is a fix by replacing the plastic shift joint retainer. 5 spd trans is more desireable though, again an sr5 piece.

Thanks for the input tbplus10. I went back through the pictures and it does have the 5 spd trans - definately a plus.

I took the liberty of adding the pics to this thread, just in case it sells and someone wants to see what you were looking at.

Truck looks amazing for the age.

Just to throw out a few observations about this truck, yes overall it's a nice truck.
But; heres some items that get my attention:
The bed, its a std Japan import bed, as I earlier pointed out these were subject to corrosion, this one from the pics looks very clean.
The front bumper; this is an SR5 model bumper, chrome and has a notch on the top edge. Std model bumpers are black, or chrome but flat with no notch on the top edge.
5Spd trns; this an SR5 item only, non sr5 had 4spd.
Graffics on the side are similar to sr5 but not sr5.
While all Toyota a/c units at that time were a dealer add-on (this was due to Toyota avoiding an added import tax) the a/c vent below the steering is not a Toyota a/c dealer add-on kit. The dealer add on kits were always sourced from Toyota, a dealer could not source these kits elsewhere if they wanted to remain an official Toyota dealer.
Inside door handles and inset on air cleaner have been painted.
Dash top cover is from a 1988 model, the package tray on the dash gives it away.
Mirrors and door handles should be chrome on an SR5 truck, these are black.
Nothing earth shattering, but a lot of mid matched parts that make me wonder about the trucks true heritage.
