RE: toyota truck question
How do you know the tranny is failing? Is it slipping, grinding, etc?

Is it an automatic or manual transmission? (I also have an 89.)

Shouldn't be too hard to find one and swap it out if it's a manual. I'd look around for a secondhand one at a picknpull or whatever for a truck of that year, unless you have a good amount of money to throw into it. Not sure about the G or W series as to what the difference is.
