Car Talk: Anti-lock brakes a must for teen driver

Dear Tom and Ray: My 17-year-old niece is interested in a 2007 Toyota Matrix, but it does not have anti-lock brakes (ABS). She might be heading to college in a place where it snows. Is it critical to have ABS? Should this be a deal-breaker on the purchase of this car?

I would never dream of driving without anti-lock brakes. Especially with wet roads, or if there is a chance of having snow and ice on the road for any time at all during the year.
