Bad power steering pump?

I have a 96 T-100, 4wd, 3.6L v6, ext cab. No modifications except for new AT tires, same size as OEM. When sitting still, it is difficult to turn the steering wheel in either direction, and when I do I get a screeching sound. If I give it some gas and move the truck while turning the steering wheel, it becomes much easier to turn.

Is this normal, or is this a sign of the power steering pump or it's system going bad?

Thank you in advance

Check your power steering pump belt, make sure it has correct tension, isnt worn badly, and isnt slipping.
