2015 Toyota Sequoia - Full-Size SUV Review

The 2015 Toyota Sequoia is back for another year with no changes from the previous year. This could mean the 2015 Toyota Sequoia is primed for a major update in the coming year.

For Toyota, the Sequoia faces some pretty stiff competition in the full-size SUV segment. The recently upgraded Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon basically dominate the segment with old competitors like the Nissan Armada and Ford Expedition also lagging in upgrades.

This segment has also taken a hit with the rise of crossover SUVs and the rise in fuel prices. When Toyota introduced the first Sequoia in 2000, the automotive landscape was much different.

In the past few years, Toyota has updated all of their trucks, SUVs and cars except for the Sequoia. Since unveiling the second generation at the 2007 LA Auto Show as a 2008 model, Toyota has made slight changes to the trim levels and added technology features.

What’s New For 2015

Nothing is new for the 2015 model year. In fact, the only change recently is the introduction of the Entune system in 2014.

Powertrain Choices

The 2015 Toyota Sequoia uses the same large engine found in the Tundra with the 5.7L V8. This engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission produces 381 HP and 401 lb-ft of torque. EPA estimated fuel economy is 13/18/15 MPG city/highway/combined for 2WD models. The 4WD models have the same combined fuel economy, but lose 1 MPG for highway.

For towing, the Sequoia uses a slightly altered Tundra frame which gives it better ride comfort, yet sacrifices towing. Properly equipped 2WD Sequoia models can tow 7,400 pounds while 4WD models tow 7,100 pounds.

Like the Tundra, there is a flex-fuel engine option for the Sequoia.

Trim Levels

Toyota offers three trim levels for the Sequoia: SR5, Limited, Platinum. These trim levels are differentiated by the amount of interior features, interior materials, chrome exterior accents and wheels.

For interior space, the Sequoia has a roomy cabin able to hold 8 passengers with optional second-row captain chairs reducing seating to 7.

The third-row seating is more roomy than other competitors and the seats fold down, as opposed to older Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon third-row seats that had to be removed. Note: the new Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon third-row operates like the Sequoia.

Another big difference between the trim levels is the adaptive air suspension found in the Platinum. This feature allows the driver to alter the Sequoia’s ride height based on the amount of cargo in the rear. It basically levels the SUV better to provide a smoother ride when transporting heavier items.

Pricing

MSRP Pricing for the 2015 Toyota Sequoia begins at $44,395 to $65,640 for the Platinum Edition. Options, dealer pricing, taxes and fees will drive these prices higher.
