Sorry, I guess just honoring the Navy as we just saw December 7th come and go again, and noticed the US Zumwalt got sent out to sea yesterday. Anyhow, I saw this little tease on the Navy's railgun and I had no idea this type of technology was able to get projectiles up to this speed, that's just amazing. Magnets? really? That's awesome!

The technology is actually a little older than the Navy advertises.
Not long before my last active duty tour, 2009, I got to see a few trial shoots of metal slugs.
The tech was developed in parallel with the new catapult launch tech, they share many similarities and theories.

Yeah, they've been talking about these for about 25 years ever since the superconductor systems started getting funding. Someone thought that if magnets can propel a mega ton train at 200 mph, why not a projectile at 2000 mph, or in this case 5600.
