What is the best generation Toyota compact pickup?

Toyota compact pickups have been in the U.S. for a while. The latest generation Tacoma is bigger but is it badder than my 1989? Will it last as long without breaking?

I guess only time and a lot of driving can answer this question. The older pickups are certainly cheap to maintain, but the newer Tacomas certainly outperform the older pickups by quite a bit. My guess would be that the engines go for a whole lot of miles, there are Tacomas out there with 200k+ that run like a top.
